Artist's Statement

Nancy Frey, known professionally as Erota, has been developing visually stimulating collages and photomontages for the last 20 years.  From early on she has realized her purpose was to make her world a more alluring place, through art, decoration and landscape.

She has always had an intense fascination for photographic art and thus it is a natural extension for her to work with photographs in her collages.  Her art explores

many themes including power, submission, beauty and sexuality, and is culled from photographs from her extensive library of erotica and images acquired during her travels to Europe, South America and the Far East.  Recently she has worked with many Asian themes and images.

The collages are provocative, stimulating and at times shocking.  They are raw and offer intimate glimpses into the erotic lives of women, yet reflect the desires and fantasies of men.  She feels that every artist has something they want to say, and that her artistic job is to evoke thought and encourage people toward new windows of looking at the world.

Erota is a native New Yorker and lives in Manhattan and Belmar, New Jersey, having spent many years on Fire Island, New York, a place that had a profound influence on her life and art.  She is an avid gardener and collects 50's and 60's antiques and textiles.   She has advanced degrees in Psychology from the University of Michigan and The New School for Social Research.  She has worked at hedge funds and a major cigar manufacturer. in a financial capacity.  Her passion for photography and erotica has translated to the images in her works.  "The greatest influence in my artistic life was the first time I saw a photography by Helmut Newton.  I was shocked, yet hypnotized by his images.  The more I studied his work, and lived with his art, I knew I wanted to work with similar images."

"My work is a photo observation of eroticism, an innate desire for sensuality, sometimes bordering on the extreme."

In 2004 she was invited to exhibit at the New York Erotic Art Fair sponsored by the Tom of Finland Foundation.  In 2005, she participated in a juried group show at the Erotic Art Show at the Tivoli Gallery, Tivoli, New York,  In 2007, 2009 and 2010, she participated in Visual Aids:  Postcards from the Edge.  The first show was at the James Cohan Gallery; the second at the Metro Pictures Gallery; the third at the Zicher Smith Gallery, all in Chelsea, New York City.
